Academy Awards Best Actresses 1929 to Present and the Gowns they wore
As the who’s who of Hollywood gathers for the 89th Academy Awards, held on February 26, 2015, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the glamour and beauty that the Oscars has brought to us since 1929. No one can argue that when an actress, especially one that wins her category, wears a designers gown that it is instant acceptance into the fashion world.
The 1st Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), honored the best films of 1927 and 1928 and took place on May 16, 1929, at a private dinner held at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles, California.
While researching the styles it is unmistakable that in 1988 Cher’s Gown designed by Bob Mackie became a game changer for the red carpet. Once that gown hit the stage you can see the trend of actresses pushing the envelope… with how far they can take their look.
So regardless of your fashion tastes, whether you put an actress on the best dressed or worst dresses or maybe the “what was she thinking” list, you have to agree one of the best parts of the awards is the ‘who or what is she wearing’ red carpet walk.
So enjoy this photo compilation put together of all the winners of the best actress category for the past 90 years and will look forward to adding each year’s newest winner.
*Note: Missing years from the below list is because the Actress was not present to accept her award. A list of those missing can be found at the end. Also the Year listed for the Oscar Win is when the movie was released NOT when the Awards Ceremony was broadcast
